While the daily changing of the guards is a tourist magnet, this majestic palace is a London icon and home of the Queen. You know that she is in residence when the flag is flying above the palace!

Built in 1703 for the Duke of Buckingham, George III acquired it in 1762 as a private house. It became an official royal residence in the reign of Queen Victoria, when it was greatly enlarged.

Come for the changing of the guard—and stay for the perfect photo op outside the official residence of the British monarchy. Tip: Tours inside state rooms are available mid-summer to fall.

Home of Queen Elizabeth ll, Buckingham Palace was also the site of 2011's most talked about kiss, a post-wedding smooch between Prince William, Duke of Cambridge & Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge.

Don't expect to see Queen Elizabeth here, but make sure you have your photograph snapped with one of the Royal Guards.

The house that forms the core of the present day palace was built in 1703 for John Sheffield, the 1st Duke of Buckingham and Normanby. Maybe we'll swing by there...

As the home of the Queen, the palace is usually closed to visitors, but you can view the interior for a brief period each summer while the Windsors are away on their holidays.

It is an interesting fact that Buckingham Palace has its own chapel, post office, swimming pool, staff cafeteria, doctor's surgery and cinema.

Buckingham Palace has been the Queen's official residence since 1837 (when Queen Victoria decided St James's Palace, just down the road, was too small and unimpressive).

I would have thought the Queen would be the de facto Mayor of Buckingham Palace
