While the daily changing of the guards is a tourist magnet, this majestic palace is a London icon and home of the Queen. You know that she is in residence when the flag is flying above the palace!

The house that forms the core of the present day palace was built in 1703 for John Sheffield, the 1st Duke of Buckingham and Normanby. Maybe we'll swing by there...

As the home of the Queen, the palace is usually closed to visitors, but you can view the interior for a brief period each summer while the Windsors are away on their holidays.

One of the secrets of the success of the British monarchy is that though it lives in palaces & travels in Rolls-Royces, it also clearly has middle class tastes in decor, behaviour & interests. More:

Buckingham Palace has been the Queen's official residence since 1837 (when Queen Victoria decided St James's Palace, just down the road, was too small and unimpressive).

Don't miss the official residence of the queen. Remember that this is only open for tourists during summer. Even if can't go inside, but the view of the gardens from the outside is already enough.
